In the 15th century, the region, then occupied by Aymara Indians, was conquered by the Inca and served as an important supplier of agrarian products to the Inca Empire. The modern city of Arequipa was founded on 15 August 1540, by Garcà Manuel de Carbajal, an emissary of Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. One year later, King Charles V of Spain gave it the rank of 'city' and the coat of arms that it still keeps. The arrival of Spanish influence left many relics and colonial architecture, which reminds the visitor of the city's colonial past, when it was the city with the highest proportion of Spanish population in the whole Viceroyalty of Peru. This led Arequipa to develop a large Peruvian Mestizo population as its demographics changed and grew over the centuries. Since the late 1940's, however, there has been increasing immigration from the Peruvian sierra, thus changing the demographic character of some parts of the city. Throughout history Arequipa remained relatively isolated during colonial and early republican times, but that changed in 1870 when a Southern railroad to the coastal port of Tacna was inaugurated, opening trade via the Pacific Ocean. The building and expansion of more roads in the 1930s also led to a direct connection with the Pan-American Highway ...
4:38 / 2093 viewPeatonalización de Mercaderes (Arequipa) por EMBARQ WRI INTERNATIONAL Over the summer I had the opportunity to visit Arequipa, Perus southern-most major city, and see first hand all the work that the city and regional governments have done to make the city more pedestrian friendly. So far, Arequipa has completed one major project, the pedestrianization of Mercaderes, the main commercial drag in the heart of the city. This street was once jam packed with cars, many of which were old and belched out dirty fumes that darkened the air. Now, the street is remarkably clean and quiet. Its a pleasant place to stroll, go shopping, and people watch. I talked with a few pedestrians and merchants whose stores lined the street and they all agreed that Mercaderes was much improved without the car traffic. Some even suggested that more streets in the city should ban cars and become more like Mercaderes. In fact, the city is planning to do exactly that. Its goal is to connect several of the more important streets in the citys historic downtown, a UNESCO world heritage site, by making them pedestrian only. It also plans to replace the citys chaotic transit system of small vans and buses with a bus rapid transit system that has fixed stops and bus-exclusive lanes. If the transit project goes through, it will be a boon for city residents and will dramatically improve the quality of life for people who live in Arequipa.
