It appeared on their 1993 album, Hand on the Torch, which was Blue Note's first platinum-selling album. It reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was their only big hit. "Cantaloop" is Blue Note's first gold single. It is sometimes called "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" The original song ("Cantaloupe Island") is a 16 bar repeated chart. An F minor chord for 4 measures, Db7 for 4 measures, D minor for 4 measures, then F minor again. "Cantaloop" follows that, but during the verses (rapping) it stays on F major. Then there is an added part which has a new horn part and the chord switches back from F major to Db7. The featured trumpet soloist is Gerard Presencer. The song makes notable mention of the Birdland jazz club in New York city in its opening line - "Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, we have something special down here at Birdland this evening: a recording for Blue Note Records." This line, spoken by Pee Wee Marquette, is taken from Art Blakey's first Birdland album A Night at Birdland Vol. 1. [info courtesy: wikipedia.org]

The first was a limited edition white label 12" release in 1990 called "Where Will We Be In The 21st Century" featuring rapper MC Honey B and jazz pianist Jessica Lauren. This attracted the attention of an indie label named Ninja Tune, and the result was nw1's 1991 12" "The Band Played The Boogie" featuring London rapper Born 2 B. It sampled one of the biggest dance-floor tunes of the burgeoning jazz dance scene, Grant Green's "Sookie Sookie", which was originally released on Blue Note Records. London's Kiss FM added "The Band Played The Boogie" to its playlist and Wilkinson received a call summoning him to EMI Records's offices in London.[citation needed] Wilkinson avoided a lawsuit and was granted rights to the archives of Blue Note Records[citation needed]. One of the resulting demos, recorded in March 1992, was Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia). This sampled the main Piano part of Herbie Hancock's recording, Cantaloupe Island. Let me tell you of these things that I see I see kisses and love, stars that only shine for us Two hearts made into one for all time And I pray that you'll give me time to show you How much I really need you And want to just hold you forever (chorus) Is it true, can I really have you? Reach out and touch you and you'll be real Are your lips forming a phrase, "You love me" Can't live without me and I'm your home And I thank you for letting me just show you That our two souls are meant to entwine into love
