It appeared on their 1993 album, Hand on the Torch, which was Blue Note's first platinum-selling album. It reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was their only big hit. "Cantaloop" is Blue Note's first gold single. It is sometimes called "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" The original song ("Cantaloupe Island") is a 16 bar repeated chart. An F minor chord for 4 measures, Db7 for 4 measures, D minor for 4 measures, then F minor again. "Cantaloop" follows that, but during the verses (rapping) it stays on F major. Then there is an added part which has a new horn part and the chord switches back from F major to Db7. The featured trumpet soloist is Gerard Presencer. The song makes notable mention of the Birdland jazz club in New York city in its opening line - "Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, we have something special down here at Birdland this evening: a recording for Blue Note Records." This line, spoken by Pee Wee Marquette, is taken from Art Blakey's first Birdland album A Night at Birdland Vol. 1. [info courtesy: wikipedia.org]

It features a sample of Herbie Hancock's song "Cantaloupe Island", and reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the group's only top 40 single. The original song ("Cantaloupe Island") was a 16 bar repeated chart consisting of F minor for 4 measures, D♭7 for 4 measures, D minor for 4 measures, then F minor again. "Cantaloop" excludes the D minor section, uses the F minor section during the verses, and goes between the F minor and D♭7 during the horn riffs and trumpet solo. The featured soloist is Gerard Presencer. The song makes notable mention of the Birdland jazz club in New York City in its opening line - "Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, we have something special down here at Birdland this evening: a recording for Blue Note Records." The line, spoken by Pee Wee Marquette, is taken from Art Blakey's first Birdland album "A Night At Birdland Vol. 1". There are recurring samples, particularly in the beginning, of two men saying "yeah!" and "what's that?". Both of these were taken from the intro to Lou Donaldson's "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funk (From Now On)". Us3 is a jazz-rap group founded in London in 1991, the brainchild of London-based producer Geoff Wilkinson. Their name was inspired by a Horace Parlan recording produced by Alfred Lion, the founder of Blue Note Records. Thischannel is dedicated to all the great rap music from back in the day.
