This song is in reference to the 1968 Independence Festival Song Competition, in which Desmond Dekker's "Intensified" beat out the Maytals' "Bim Today" for first prize. Toots felt the competition was judged unfairly and he lamented his defeat to Desmond Dekker's 'Intensified' in the single 'Desmond Dekker Came First". The Maytals won the first annual competition in 1966, with "Bam Bam" and again in 1969, with "Sweet and Dandy" and in 1972, with "Pomp and Pride".
