The GR-7 turbojet engine was built by Don Giandomenico as an educational tool used to further his understanding of gas turbine engines. The engine is based on an unmodified Cummins VT-50 14-liter diesel engine turbo. Coupled with a stainless combustor system (and several other support systems) the turbo is able to produce 50+ pounds of static reactive thrust. The starter system being shown features dual 3-phase brushless 500 watt drive motors that are coupled to the turbine with a retractable Bendix style drive coupling. The engine has since been modified with an electronic control unit that automatically drives the starter assembly during startup. Be sure to read more about this project at RCDON.COM.

This is a preheater I made out of an ammo can, some flexible aluminum dryer hose, a dryer conduit nipple, pig putty, and an MSR XGK camp stove. The video demonstrates setting it up and lighting it. I got this idea from an Alaskan flyer who posted on a web forum. His design had two hoses, but my aircraft has retractable gear therefore ample room for one big hose through the gear door under the cowling. I built this primarily because I wanted a "simple" and very portable heating solution since I am based at a tie down with no electricity. Will also come in handy when away from home at a lonely strip ;-) Basically, I cut large holes around the bottom of the ammo can... over 1 inch diameter on the ends, the long sides I used smaller holes. Jig sawed a large 4 inch hole in the lid for the conduit nipple and used high temp pig putty (plumbers epoxy) to seal it in. I have a peice of safety wire to hold the dryer hose in place on the nipple, and also a loose one to hold it from extending when not in use. The hose is fairly limp when extended, it will extend to 5 feet... I just extend what I need and shove it up in the cowling. The camp stove will burn any kind of liquid fuel, gasoline (unleaded), white gas, kerosene, Jet-A, diesel etc. The bottle is 20 oz. and should last up to 2+ hours. Lighting the heater requires it's own prime and preheat. Give the bottle a few pumps. Let some fuel into the heater bowl, light it. Let it heat the jet and bowl up... when it starts "poofing <b>...</b>

This Model of Stephenson's Steam Engine was made in 2008 by master glassblower Michal Zahradník. Highlights: * The crankshaft is glass. The piston is glass. The counterweight that makes the wheel spin evenly is glass. Imagine that everything is made out of glass. * There are no sealants used. All is accomplished by a perfectly snug fit. The gap between the piston and its compartment is so small, that the water that condensates from the steam seals it shut! * Notice the elaborate excessive steam exhaust system next to the piston. * The piston is the most arduous part to make due to to extreme level of precision needed. Its parts have to be so accurate that no machinery is of use here. The piston and its cylinder must be hand sanded to perfection, and they are very likely to crack in the process! On average, three out of four crack.

This is video 1 in a series of videos which will show how to build your own Tesla Turbine for fun and experimentation. Many operational parameters eg air injector angle, hole size, hole shape, number of holes, number of discs and disc gap are all user modifiable so that the turbine can be used for serious research. A primary consideration in the design is to keep the cost down. For this reason the discs are made from standard CDs, the body is acrylic and the bearings are standard skate bearings. Using acrylic for the body allows it to be made using a paper pattern, a fretsaw and a drill or file. The turbine housing (the round bit) is a 3" section of off-the-shelf 127mm OD acrylic tube. A plastics merchant will sell you the 5mm acrylic sheet and will sell you the tube cut to size. Alternatively the end plates could be made from 5mm plywood. "A common experimental platform" Lots of people have built Tesla turbines and many have performed their own experiments. They all built turbines to various designs, some of their own devising. My idea is to standardise on one design which is based on a cheap, commonly available standard disc, namely, the humble CD. It will then be possible for experimentors to compare like with like and discover and share sucessfull modifications.
